Documentary Follows 5 Independent Canadian Artists →
A couple of months ago, I ended up at the premiere of Born To It, a simple and inspiring film by director Tim Thompson about “creating, sustaining and chasing your dreams.” The 92-minute documentary features the musical journeys of five independent Toronto-based musicians and the roads they have travelled to sustain their artistic existence.

The Zolas Produced Their and Other Vancouver... →
Gray and Dobrzanski are fully ensconced in the Vancouver music scene. The opening song on Tic Toc Tic references local uber-indie venue The Biltmore (where they will kick off their upcoming tour with a CD release party on Jan. 27). Gray’s roommate is Tyler Bancroft from Said the Whale. The Zolas just opened a gig for Hey Ocean! at The Vogue in Vancouver, and Dan Mangan stopped by the sound...

Canadians are flying their freak flag at Sundance →
Not really music-related, but still a win for Canadians!  Let that Freak Flag fly! Canadians are freaking out the Sundance Film Festival. The Canuck reputation for mildness has been shattered and splattered all over the snowy mountains here in visceral movies that pursue the shocks and profits of the horror, sci-fi and thriller genres. “I think I speak for everyone: my pulse is like 170,”...

Narrow Crafts Review of In-Flight Safety's "We Are... →
This four-piece out of Halifax took me by total surprise. I went to check out a show featuring some out-of-town friends of mine, and In-Flight Safety provided the crowd with some sweet, sweet opening magic. Despite my drunken inability to actually grab an album off the guys before the end of the night (and remember their name. Sorry), I got my hands on a copy of “We Are an Empire, my...

On thesixtyone, new artists make music and listeners decide what’s good. We’re nurturing a growing ecosystem where talented folks can sell songs and merchandise directly to their fans. Unlike a record or distribution deal where they only make $1-2 per album (if they ever get paid, that is), artists on thesixtyone make at least $7 per album and are paid every 30 days — no wait for...

Tegan and Sara Discuss their Success →
You’d think musical talent was in their gene pool. But twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin didn’t exactly grow up in a musical family. Although the indie rock duo took piano classes as children, they didn’t discover their passion for music until their teenage years when they found an old guitar hidden away under the stairs. That’s when the nightly ritual began: they would...

Somewhere in my heart, it’s the end of the world. These days, nothing is funny. I am mourning people I know. People I don’t know. People who are still trapped under rubble and won’t be rescued in time. I can’t help it. Everybody I talk to says the same thing: time has stopped.
